Colposcope

Colposcopy is a procedure that uses a special microscope (called a colposcope) to look into the vagina and cervix (the opening to the uterus, or womb). The colposcope magnifies, or enlarges, the image of the outer portion of the cervix. Sometimes a small sample of tissue (called a biopsy) is taken for further study. The tissue samples help to diagnose cancer of the cervix. Colposcopy if done early is useful for early detection of precancerous cervix. Indications for colposcopy: these are Patients with chronic vaginal discharge, chronic vaginal itching, irregular vaginal bleeding, Post coital bleeding, Post menopausal bleeding and abnormal PAP smear (Pap tests are done on a regular basis to screen for cancer of the cervix and other problems).
